Her career as a Jewish-American social worker took her around the globe, being the first woman to be deployed overseas by the American Jewish Joint Distribution Committee (JDC) in Cuba.

Laura entered Amsterdam 24 hours after the Germans left and was among the first civilians to come to the aid of concentration camp survivors. As the JDC representative in Belgium, she dedicated herself to helping children and the elderly.
