  1. LPG (Liquefied Petroleum Gas) is a hydrocarbon gas that exists in a liquefied form. LPG is a colourless, low carbon and highly efficient fuel. Supplied in two main forms, propane (C3H8) and butane (C₄H₁₀), LPG has a range of uses – from providing fuel for leisure parks, crop-drying, BBQs, heating homes and much more.
LPG is liquefied petroleum gas and is: Obtained during the processing of crude oil, or direct from the North Sea. Colourless and odourless. An odourising agent is added before distribution to give its characteristic smell. Half as heavy as water when in liquid form. It will float on water before vapourising.

Like all fossil fuels, LPG is a non renewable source of energy. It is extracted from crude oil and natural gas. It is a safe, clean burning, reliable, high calorific value fuel. The main composition of LPG are hydrocarbons containing three or four carbon atoms. The normal components of LPG thus, are propane (C3H8) and butane (C4H10) (Fig 1).

    • LPG produces 90% less carbon monoxide and 50% less smog than mains natural gas
    • As it readily evaporates, LPG poses no environmental risks in the event of spillages
    • LPG is not odourless, making it easier to detect leaks
