Jul 10, 2003 · The seat of Clayton County, Jonesboro is located in Georgia’s upper central Piedmont region, approximately eighteen miles south of Atlanta, just southeast of Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport. It is the site of the 1864 Battle of Jonesboro and the fictionalized setting for Margaret Mitchell ’s 1936 novel Gone With the Wind.

The history of Jonesboro as a settlement goes back to the early days when settlers arrived in upper middle Georgia. Jonesboro was originally called Leaksville, and records show that as early as 1823, the State of Georgia granted a charter for the Leaksville Academy, in what was then Fayette County.
