Having a kid makes you a Mother/Father, doesn't make you a Mom/Dad, if you know what I'm saying. I had a teacher growing up who was more of a Dad-like figure for me than my own father ever was, and I hope one day when I have my own kids that I can be the Dad I wish my own father had been.

Maybe try to spend more time with your mom, e.g ask her out or talk to her on daily basis? that's how we know we love each other around the house. Admittedly it is weird to say I love you in Vietnamese culture. My friend did this as a prank when we were 16 - he took my phone and texted "I love you mom" to my mom's phone.

Saying, "I love you" to my family, especially to my son, is as natural as breathinng to me, but I know that is not the case for everyone. I am sorry that you have not grown up hearing it. When you have your own children, I hope you will tell them often.
