Honda's big electrification push will include US-oriented hydrogen fuel cell cars. The automaker has revealed that it will begin US production of fuel cell vehicles in 2024. The first model will be a plug-in hybrid based on the current-generation CR-V (pictured here).

The new fuel cell system is key to Honda’s hydrogen business strategy. Co-developed by Honda and GM over the last decade, the new Honda fuel cell system advances performance and doubles durability while reducing cost by two-thirds compared to the previous generation 1 system.

The Honda fuel cell system features fuel cells with solid polymer membrane, and each cell consists of 1) electrode assembly in which a solid polymer membrane (electrolyte membrane) is sandwiched between a hydrogen electrode and an air electrode and 2) separators (bipolar plates) that form the flow paths for hydrogen, air and coolant.

Honda today announced that it will produce an all-new hydrogen fuel cell electric vehicle (FCEV) based on the recently launched, all-new Honda CR-V starting in 2024 at its Performance Manufacturing Center (PMC) in Marysville, Ohio.
