Nov 23, 2011 · How do I test for a bad capacitor with a simple digital multimeter? The cap in question is a 1000μF 6.3V Electrolytic, 105 deg C, Low ESR capacitor, 8x12mm. I looked through the, Stickies/FAQs and other sections of the forum here; I even did a title search for "test capacitor" but no love.

Obviously if your meter has a capacitance function you should check that. DC check.... Put the meter on ohms and connect, let cap charge from the meter. [#s will stop going up]

Jul 26, 2024 · Howdy all I have a 90uF Capacitor 200/275 VRMS and measured the ESR . Reading says 00.3 Ohms and about 1/2 a second later 00,0 and says low ESR (Really No Kidding). I have checked it on the multimeter and reading is 94.7uF well within soec as ir has a 25% tolerance on it. Can anyone advise me is this capacitor likely to fail

Mar 9, 2024 · The Fluke 87 DMM I use is powered by a 9V battery, but the voltage for testing resistance is limited to 2V or so. As for testing capacitance, what a DMM can test is best learned from the DMM's specifications. I haven't used my Fluke 87 to test capacitance. AFAIK, an ordinary DMM doesn't test ESR or impedance.
