Start with large beads and a stiffer thread (such as FireLine) instead of nylon thread. Peyote-stitched strips worked with nylon thread tend to be flexible and more difficult to hold. Wax your thread to keep the beads from sliding around. String an even or odd number of beads, alternating colors if desired to help better see the pattern emerge.

The process involves picking up one bead, skipping the next, stitching through the subsequent one, and repeating the sequence. In one drop peyote stitch you weave in one bead at a time into the stitch. Whereas in two or three drop peyote stitch you weave in two or three beads at a time.

It's as simple as: pick up a bead, skip a bead, stitch through a bead, repeat. It's fun to play with beads of different sizes and shapes, too. Here are a few 6-row examples. Clockwise from upper left: 4mm square beads, bugle beads, 8/0 Delica beads, 6/0 round beads. The process is exactly the same!

Begin the odd count peyote stitch by stringing an odd number of beads (typically seed beads) in the color of your choice. Tip: The number of beads strung should be double the number desired in each row. Continue to string one bead, skip the last bead in the previous row, then pass the needle through the next bead in the previous row.

Pick up a bead on your beading needle. Skip the last bead of your initial set, and pass your needle through the next seed bead in the row. The bead you just strung should line up over the bead below it from the first set of beads. Continue to work, picking up a bead, skipping the next bead in the row, and passing through the next bead.
