This easy, 1.5-to-2-mile hike at picturesque Horsethief Butte explores around and atop the butte and into its side canyons. Faint outlines of Native American petroglyphs can be seen on the rock face.

Bear right here for Kennewick, and drive 2.9 miles. Turn right into the new trailhead, with restrooms, for Horsethief Butte. Bear in mind that this parking area fills up quickly and early on weekend mornings with people arriving to take rock climbing clinics.

The Horsethief Butte Trail can be found in Columbia Hills State Park, the South Cascades. The Butte is the jewel of this area; it is situated near a beautiful 90-acre lake. From the top of the horseshoe-shaped natural monument visitors enjoy breathtaking and spectacular views.

The trailhead for Horsethief Butte is just about 1.3 miles east of the entrance to the park (which is not real well marked but clearly descends down a road to the lake).

Rising 500 feet above the Columbia River, Horsethief Butte is a 1,100 by 600 foot basalt fortress within Columbia Hills Historical State Park, and this short hike provides an excellent tour of this interesting formation.
