Oct 9, 2024 · NAD 'n' NCD: Hiwatt DR103 and SE212F. Though I haven't set it up yet (have to make a spot for it), and it'll be a bit before I can play it, I figured I'd post a photo for anyone interested in seeing one of the new Hiwatt amps. The amp is the well-known DR103 model, and the cab is an SE212F with Fane F75 speakers.

Jun 15, 2008 · 11,794. Aug 12, 2009. #16. As sweet as the Vox AC30 is, its clean is actaully fairly dirty thus edgy. You can't compare it to even a 50w Hiwatt with those enormous Partridge trannies. Hiwatt is a true, rich, high headroom clean.

May 11, 2017 · I can't say how close it is to amp-in-a-box since I've only played a bone crushing Hiwatt a handful of times, but I really like the flavor. There's no question about what the pedal is trying to accomplish. I mostly use it with Ch.1 Fat in a Mesa Mk.V but you can dial the gain back to use it as a Hiwatt flavored boost as well.

However, the 103 is also 52 years old with the old Partridges, components, etc and the 504 is a new production with fresh parts.

Apr 20, 2018 · IMO, the DR103 has bigger, deeper tone and even more headroom than the DR504 (which isn't exactly an early breakup kind of amp). One of the DR103 clones I've built (the one I bought back from the 3rd owner, after 10 years of use) is being used as the bass head in my shop. It sits on top of a 4x10 and 1x15 bass speaker stack.

Sep 23, 2017 · For me, the Hiwatt (or in my case, Reeves Custom 50) as a "pedal platform" or all around "great" amp is 100% truth. For me its not an anti-Marshall or anti-Fender thing. In fact, its an "I want all those sounds and more". I can get the Robin Trower tones and the Brian Setzer tones and the Ritchie Blackmore tones.

Apr 19, 2018 · Hiwatt DR103 is a great amplifier congrats ,, I had an '81 version myself and sold. it to a guy here in 2006 last year they had the Partridge transformers. I still have a 50 watt combo and a 200w head and 4 Hiwatt cabs w/ Fanes . Really love the Hiwatt tone and feel possibly my all time favorite amplifiers.

Aug 26, 2015 · As a Hiwatt owner and player, I'd have to say that they are the odd men out in that list. Very different from the Marshall style amps you're otherwise looking at. Just get a JMP style amp with a master volume and you're good!
