As you found out... It is the foam between the headliner and the fabric that breaks down and causes your headliner to fall apart. The only good solution is to remove the foam from the backing using coarse sandpaper or solvent. Then use a spray adhesive (3M spray-on stuff) to adhere the new fabric (or vinyl) to the backing.

Actually put mine in about 2 years ago. Originally mine had the perforated vinyl type material, but when I re-did it, I used the deluxe cloth headliner material for that year. Now it looks much nicer than when it was new.
