Replacement handles for premium hatchets go for ~$40 or more. In view of these prices, I have trouble arguing with a ~$10 hatchet.

Aug 23, 2021 · It seems like the most commonly seen progression, is: Hatchet - 1 to 1.25 pound head, on a 14" to 17" handle. Small Axe - 1.25 to 1.5 pound head, on an 18" to 20" handle. Hunter's Axe / Camp Axe - somewhere between a Small Axe, and a Forest Axe. Forest Axe - 1.5 to 2.25 pound head, on a 24" to 26" handle.

Truth be told you could try out a $15 hatchet and it would be a crap shoot but chances are better than most care to admit that it would be fine. I'm a fan of the HF hatchets for what you get. The steel is surprisingly good.

Jan 16, 2024 · A folding saw adds significant capability. For firewood processing a hatchet is sufficient. A folding saw decreases the workload and speeds things up. An axe is good for felling and bucking larger trees. I'm amazed at how well equipped I am with just a folding saw and a hatchet while hunting, hiking, and camping.

Feb 28, 2017 · The handle of was 1" shorter. Both bits are the same thickness though the GB is longer. The Plumb also has a flat or nearly flat cutting edge. The GB's handle is more comfy for longer cutting use. But the half hatchet straight handle is much more comfortable to turn around and hammer with the poll (as designed).

I have used two small very sharp hatchets for both routine cutting chores as well as light-duty chopping and shaving wood: a Grans Bruk mini-hatchet and a Karesuando 8.75" hunter's hatchet.
