Sep 6, 2010 · I'm also a Minneapolis native, and I would add that when we say "bye" on its' own it is pronounced differently that when used at the end of the word goodbye. Using the word "bye" on it's own we will draw out the final "e" into almost its own syllable, like: by-eee, in sing-song fashion. Whereas at the end of "goodbye" it is clipped, like: good-by.

In answer to your original question, English has many words that mean or have meant both hello and goodbye. They're not in common use because, well, English has many words. The benefit of being a compound of German, French, Latin, and whatever else might wander into a dimly lit alley is that English can be precise about what's being said.
