Nov 27, 2012 · A./. B.the. The answer is B. I don't know why A is incorrect. I think in the example, "beach" has its specific purpose and doesn't only indicates the place. Such as the difference between "go to school" and "go to the school". "go to school" means "go to school to study". "go to the school" just means the place which you go to.

The rain started in the past; John's desire to go to the beach was also in the past, but before the rain started. The but in this sentence causes me to believe that John no longer wants to go.
