On February 18, 1879, George McGill received patent 212,316 [9] for the McGill Single-Stroke Staple Press, the first commercially successful stapler. This device weighed over two and a half pounds and loaded a single 1⁄2 -inch-wide (13 mm) wire staple, which it could drive through several sheets of paper.

Legend has it that the first known stapler device was made in the 18th century as a regal gift for Louis XV. However, that all changed when George McGill received U.S. patent #56,587 for “small, bendable paper fasteners” in 1866.

George McGill Invented the First Functional Stapler Some will point to a fastener that was patented in 1866 as the first “true” stapler. Invented by the Novelty Manufacturing Company, it could bind paper together with a binder that was like a staple.

In 1866, George McGill got the first patent for a bendable brass paper fastener. In 1867, he got the patent on a functional staple press (as opposed to opulently decorative stapler – the French king’s staples were said to be made of gold and embellished with precious stones!) to drive the fasteners through paper.
