The Garifuna are the descendants of indigenous Arawak, Kalinago (Island Carib), and Afro-Caribbean people.

Aug 20, 2024 · In 1832, led by the charismatic and ambitious Alejo Beni, a group of Garifuna arrived on the southern Belizean coastline. It is this miraculous marine arrival that is celebrated every November in various Garifuna areas, including Dangriga, Seine Bight, Hopkins in the Stann Creek district, and Punta Gorda in the Toledo district .

Afro-Caribbean Garifuna culture combines Caribbean fishing and farming traditions with a mixture of South American and African music, dance and spirituality. UNESCO declared Garifuna language, dance and music in Belize to be a “Masterpiece of the Oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanity” in 2001.

1802 saw the arrival of Garifuna in Belize — an ethnic group that had seen their entire ways of life uprooted by slavery. And their origins are as much a random act of circumstance as their arrival in Belize.
