Jun 6, 2019 · I just had a fiber optic cable installed at my home ("Sonic Gigabit Fiber"), which terminates in a modem which converts the fiber-optic signal to a high-speed broadband Internet connection. This modem is then connected to a wifi router (via a Cat5-E ethernet cable), and the router then puts out a wifi network.

Fiber was largely unknown at the time that the AirPort Extreme was designed. For that reason, Apple makes no mention of fiber cabability in the specifications or setup instructions for the AirPort Extreme.

My internet setup is a direct fiber optic line from the node to the ISP gateway/modem (in passthrough mode) to the AirPort Extreme serving as the router/DHCP server and WiFi access point.
