A member of the prominent Grey family of Northumberland, Earl Grey was the third son of Sir Henry Grey, 1st Baronet of Howick [4] (see below). The first Earl Grey was succeeded by his eldest son, Charles, 2nd Earl Grey.

Charles Grey, 2nd Earl Grey, KG, PC served as the Prime Minister of the United Kingdom between November 1830 to July 1834. A native of Northumberland, he was appointed Viscount Howick and Baron Grey of Howick following the death of his father in 1807.

A follower of Fox, Grey had argued for constitutional reform since entering Parliament in 1786. He was an ardent supporter of Catholic emancipation and presided over the act to abolish slavery in all British-controlled territories (1833).

Grey had a typical aristocratic education: he attended Eton between 1773 and 178; he entered Trinity College Cambridge in 1781 but left in 1784 without taking a Degree. He spent most of the next three years travelling around Europe on his Grand Tour.
