  1. The dragline, or dragline excavator, is a mechanized excavator and crawler that is used in large-scale works. It operates with a shovel or scoop attached to the machine only with cables, which offers it a wide range of action and load. However, it reduces power, so the dragline is ideal for excavating and hauling materials that are not very hard.

Draglines operate by lowering a bucket onto the terrain from a boom and then reeling the bucket in with a winch located in front of the machine. A blade on the bucket scrapes and collects surface material until the bucket is full, where it is then raised and emptied into a dump truck or designated location.

Utilized in a similar fashion as cranes, draglines are used primarily for open-pit operations to dismantle and transport materials. In strip mining operations, draglines are used to remove overburden from mines. Unlike most mining equipment, the bulk of draglines are not diesel-powered.

A dragline bucket system consists of a large bucket which is suspended from a large truss -like boom (or mast) with wire ropes. The bucket is maneuvered by means of a number of ropes and chains. The hoist rope, powered by large diesel or electric motors, supports the bucket and hoist-coupler assembly from the boom.

    Dragline excavator - Wikipedia

A dragline excavator is a heavy-duty excavator used in civil engineering and surface mining. It was invented in 1904, and presented an immediate challenge to the steam shovel and its diesel and electric powered descendant, the power shovel. Much more efficient than even the largest of the latter, it enjoyed … See more

Draglines fall into two broad categories: those that are based on standard, lifting cranes, and the heavy units which have to be built on-site. Most crawler cranes, with an added winch drum on the front, can act as a dragline. … See more
