Devotion is paced like a documentary rather than a feature narrative film. The plot doesn't have an inciting incident, nor is there really any driving force to give the story purpose. It isn't a plot so much as a portrait of characters who happened to be involved in the Korean War.

Devotion is based on the true story of the U.S. Navy's first Black pilot, Jesse Brown, and his wingman, Tom Hudner. The film closely follows their experiences during the Korean War, including Jesse's tragic death and Tom's efforts to save him.

Near the beginning of the film, two F8F-2 Bearcats are seen criss-crossing the centerline of the taxiway. This maneuvering is done with "tail-dragger" type aircraft due to the angle the aircraft sits which prevents the pilot from being able to see the centerline otherwise.

Devotion is far more interested in what's happening on earth rather than in the sky. It's a character drama with occasional bursts of action, and while there's certainly nothing wrong with that, the film ends up rather muddled.
