The Curtiss JN "Jenny" is a series of biplanes built by the Glenn Curtiss Aeroplane Company of Hammondsport, New York, later the Curtiss Aeroplane and Motor Company.

In spite of its docile appearance, the Jenny was the first American airplane to be used in war. In 1916, Pancho Villa led a group of bandits into Columbus, New Mexico and attacked the US 13th Calvary Regiment. They seized horses, military supplies and finally burnt down half the town.

Curtiss JN-4D Jenny. The Curtiss Jenny stands alone as the United States’ most iconic World War I (WWI) training aircraft. Primarily a flight trainer, some Jennies had machine guns and bomb racks mounted for advanced training.The Museum restored this Jenny to represent S.C. #4037 at Love Field, Texas, in 1918.

Jul 5, 2017 · With its dual cockpits and controls and 90-hp Curtiss OX-5 V8 engine, the JN-4 was ideally suited for pilot training. Introduced in June 1917, the JN-4D incorporated some important improvements.

Aug 11, 2016 · The JN-4H models featured 150-hp Hispano-Suiza engines replacing the 90-hp OX-5, a welcome upgrade for the seriously under-powered Jenny. While designed and used primarily as a trainer, the Jenny also saw service as a reconnaissance, bomber, ground attack, seaplane, and fighter aircraft.

Oct 25, 2023 · The museum’s Jenny, serial number 3409, was restored to pristine condition over a number of years by members of the local Vintage Aircraft Group. They elected to leave the wings and control surfaces uncovered so visitors to could see the wire-braced wooden construction used in aircraft at that time.

Jan 28, 2025 · The plane designed to fill this need was the Curtiss JN-4 biplane. The JN-4 was an improved version of the earlier JN-2 which Glenn Curtiss first built in 1916. It was powered by the newly-designed Curtiss OX-5 V8 90 hp engine, and had a top speed of around 75 mph.

Navy float plane Jenny’s were powered by the 100hp OXX-6. The underpowered JN-4D’s engine was later upgraded in later models (150hp) to the Hispano-Suiza which enabled them to carry a gun, bomb devices and photography equipment. A JN-4D made the first landing at Langley Field in summer 1917.
