Cumberland Plateau, westernmost of three divisions of the Appalachian Mountains, U.S., extending southwestward for 450 miles (725 km) from southern West Virginia to northern Alabama. The plateau is 40 to 50 miles (65 to 80 km) wide and lies between the Appalachian Ridge and Valley region to the east and the rolling plains to the west.

Sep 12, 2018 · With portions remaining remote and rugged, the Cumberland Plateau is a global hotspot for amphibians, cave fauna and vascular plants, and some of our nation's greatest variety of fish and mollusks, including laurel dace, purple bean and Cumberland pigtoe.

Rising over 1,000 feet (305 m) above the surrounding landscape, the Cumberland Plateau is a deeply dissected plateau with roughly 400 feet (122 m) of topographic relief and many sandstone outcroppings and bluffs.

The Cumberland Plateau contains about 4,300 acres in the swath that is about 55 miles wide on the northern border of Tennessee near the Virginia/Kentucky line and less than 40 miles wide at the state's southern border near Chattanooga.

I am adding a couple maps of what constitutes the Cumberland Plateau to my blog. The reason for doing so is as a tool for myself to remind me what areas make it up. I have maps of the counties in Tennessee that fall into the plateau region.
