Jul 8, 2020. #5. Chinese elms should be outside at all times until the temps get to around freezing, then placing them in an unheated garage should suffice until the temps go back above freezing. Trees are outdoor plants and need the humidity of the air, indoors are too dry for them and they will suffer and soon die.

May 2, 2019 · Hi everyone. New to forum and bonsai. I purchased a Chinese elm 3 years and have usually brought it in for the winter. This year I kept it outside for the winter. Im in New Jersey. Im beginning to become worried that it didnt make the winter. The tree has small buds but they are not growing or opening. Branches are still flexible and alive.

Feb 18, 2011 · My Chinese elm is in the cold greenhouse all winter. There temperatures go well below freezing for many days. But still the tree has most foliage until end of March. This happenes since 20 or so years and the tree is happy and will grow new buds by the end of March. I suppose the tree does have a clear dormancy period.

5a. Jan 18, 2020. #1. I have had my bonsai since Christmas and it has seemed healthy, since it first dropped about half it’s leaves after shipping. Yesterday I noticed some leaves had begun to turn yellow and there was a couple red ones at the top. These leaves are withering. Top view shows red leaves the best.

Jan 26, 2022 · Chinese elm sometimes do not go fully dormant so growers in warmer areas tried repotting with leaves on and found that's still OK. They also discovered they can repot Chinese elm any time of year. I still try to repot Chinese elm either side of leaves opening but would still be comfortable repotting when the tree is in full leaf if necessary.

Sep 3, 2014 · About 6 weeks ago I noticed that the growth had significantly slowed - no new shoots, only new leaves at budding nodes. About half of the new growth would start to blacken and shrivel after a week. The shriveling includes the leaves, buds, and tips of the shoots/small branches. However new growth, while slow, did not stop entirely.

7. Feb 6, 2018. #6. Black Spot mainly affects new growth and usually in the spring when new growth is coming in and hasn't hardened off yet. If this fungus isn't taken care of right away it will continue on past the leaves and into the branches killing them as it progresses.
