Apr 11, 2018 · Some say it was a part of a hunting ritual, while others believe the petroglyphs are a result of altered states of mind. This treasure trove is located on the Naval Air Weapons Station, China Lake, a major research, development, test and evaluation facility active since 1943.

The largest concentration of petroglyphs are located within the Coso Petroglyph National Historic Park on the Naval Air Weapons Station China Lake, or NAWS. The Navy allows the public to visit those petroglyphs that are located in Little Petroglyph Canyon (also known as Renegade Canyon) on a limited basis.

Coso Rock Art District is a rock art site containing over 100,000 Petroglyphs by Paleo-Indians and/or Native Americans. [1] The district is located near the towns of China Lake and Ridgecrest, California. Big and Little Petroglyph Canyons were declared a National Historic Landmark in 1964.
