The Call of the Wild is a short adventure novel by Jack London, published in 1903 and set in Yukon, Canada, during the 1890s Klondike Gold Rush, when strong sled dogs were in high demand. The central character of the novel is a dog named Buck.

The story centers on Buck, the spoiled pet dog who is stolen from his California home and sold north as a sled dog. As Buck journeys ever farther into the wilderness of Canada and Alaska, he finds himself caught both physically and emotionally between civilization and wildness.

Spitz is a fierce animal—a “devil-dog,” one man calls him—who is used to fighting with other dogs and winning. He meets his match in Buck, however, who is as strong as Spitz and possesses more cunning.

The CGI dog has garnered a multitude of reactions, with The Wrap noting that the lifeless eyes of the CGI model made the movie an uneasy watch for a dog-owner.
