Jul 21, 2020 · Did Dell change its pinout order for the cpu fan header as it crossed from gen 4 to 5? i fried my 7040 fan and had a 9010 at work that was on its way out the door so i snagged the fan. I noticed that the 9010 fan connector order was BLUE BLACK RED YELLOW. On the 7040/5040 fan connector, the order is BLACK RED YELLOW BLUE

Immediately after I started the machine (literally the moment I pressed the button) there was smoke coming from the CPU, so I immediately stopped it. After that I reconnected the CPU fan to the CPU fan port, started my system and everything runs ok with one exception.

Jan 5, 2011 · If you have the CPU fan plugged into the mobo and still cannot get speed control, check two things. First and foremost, make sure it is plugged into the mobo pinout identified for the CPU_FAN. Only that pinout is connected to the actual temperature measured inside the CPU.

How about this and you tell me if I'm right or wrong using the picture I posted. Apr 23, 2022 · Google has a lot of images matching search keyword "dell cpu fan pinout" for 5-pin option, you can reference your original cooler to make sure it it matches (ground, 12v, PWM signals for sense/tachometer and control), might need some wire swaps.

Feb 1, 2016 · If you connect a 4 pin pwm fan to a 3 pin header, you will lose the pwm control, and the fan will run at full speed. If that 3 pin connection has a rheostat control, then you can fine tune the rpm. For a single fan, the zalman fanmate 2 or similar will do the job. More likely with 4 fans to manage a front panel controller will do the job.
