6 days ago · There are two known significant repunched mintmark (S/S) varieties for 1936-S nickels, but no such doubled die reverse varieties. See Buffalo Five Cents (1913-1938) | VarietyPlus® | NGC . It is unlikely that a significant new variety would be discovered nearly 90 years after the coin was struck.

Mar 1, 2025 · In the ANA Grading Standards book, two things are mentioned for this year Buffalo Nickel. #1 - " Very few Buffalo nickels of certain issues, especially in the 1920s can meet the FD requirement." FD is described by ANA as Full Details even though it is not a grade descriptor given by any TPG.

How do you grade a Buffalo nickel that is only lightly worn yet has little or no detail evident in the bison's head? This is a problem which collectors and dealers frequently face when attempting to grade many of the key and semi-key dates in this widely collected series.

Aug 10, 2021 · On June 15, 1938, the Associated Press ran a short piece from Denver announcing the end of America’s most iconic coin: “That’s the last of the Buffaloes,” Mark A. Skinner, superintendent of the United States Mint here, remarked as he broke up the casts [dies] used in manufacturing 350,000 buffalo nickels.

Dec 23, 2024 · No doubt I will be skewered for saying this but all I see is a leaning D mintmark, a somewhat compressed 1938, and extracurricular activity present on the tops of half the letters of LIBERTY. Other than that, the Buffalo nickel looks to be in excellent condition.

Note the beveled edge, brilliant (not satiny) luster, and the "orange peel" effect that is evidence of die deterioration after the dies had struck a number of coins:
