Aug 14, 2010 · Wool blanket smell I just purchased 3 new OD Green 90/10% Wool Blend Blankets from Canteenshop.com for my son, wife and myself. The smell however is too overwhelming for my wife. The blankets are brand new and it has that oil smell to it. I don't know how else to describe it. For those of you who owns one, you know what smell I'm talking about.

Jun 7, 2011 · My wool blanket was US Army surplus and lacked any naphthalene (mothball) odor, so I didn't have to deal with it. Mothballs are a solid at room temperature, but they sublime. . .meaning they evaporate which is what caused the odor. This is a volatile compound. You'd want to promote off-gassing of this compound from your blanket.
