ASTM A490 bolts and galvanized ASTM A325 bolts possess sufficient ductility to undergo one pretensioned installation, but are not consistently ductile enough to undergo a second pretensioned installation.

ASTM A325 structural bolts are designed for steel to steel connections. Because they are used in such a specific application, they have dimensional characteristics that are unique and limited compared to most other fastener grades.

Prior to its withdrawal in 2016, the ASTM A325 specification covered high strength heavy hex structural bolts from 1/2″ diameter through 1-1/2″ diameter. These bolts are intended for use in structural connections and therefore have shorter thread lengths than standard hex bolts.

ASTM F3125/F3125M is a structural bolt specification covering inch and metric bolt grades. This specification contains 4 inch series bolting grades: A325, F1852, A490, and F2280. These will be addressed in this article.

Below are the approximate minimum mechanical properties specific to a given diameter of A325 fastener. Below is a chart comparing the mechanical property requirements for A325 versus F3125 Grade A325. As you can see, the requirements are identical through 1” diameter, but beyond that, F3125 Grade A325 has a higher minimum strength requirement.
