.308 & .45-70 - Gun and Game Forum
Dec 1, 2012 · The .45-70 is fun to shoot, OCCASIONALLY, while the .308 is a much more versatile rifle caliber, and a much more comfortable rifle to shoot REGULARLY. Unless one lives in big bear country, or has a desire to hunt HUGE critters, like moose or bison, or grizzly, the .308 would be the better choice.
.308 big enough for say....Grizzly??? - Gun and Game Forum
Jan 16, 2011 · As for 45-70, again, it depends on the load. If you are talking the trapdoor loads of yesteryear, shot placement will be critical, even though MANY buffalo were killed with them. Modern 45-70 rifles can be loaded with ammo that will put the smackdown on ANY critter. The Big Five of Africa, and Grizzlies, and Brown bears have ALL fallen to the ...

45-70 vs 444 marlin vs 450 marlin | Gun and Game Forum
Oct 9, 2011 · The .444 creates a "sharper" recoil than the .45-70, the .450 Marlin is just like a heavy loaded .45-70 and the 1886 in .45-70 is a pussycat rifle to shoot no kidding. No ports are on the 1886 but you have nearly a 9 pound rifle of real steel and wood there. No rubber buttplates but none needed.
35 Whelen vs 45-70 vs 444 Marlin | Gun and Game Forum
Jul 8, 2013 · While I don't use it for deer, I have a .444 Marlin. I would be comfortable using it for anything except for large brown bears except perhaps with loaded up 300gr hard casts. The .444 has better long range ballistics than the 45-70 - but the 45-70 is easier to find and as noted it has a wider range for reloading.
.308 or .30-06? - Gun and Game Forum
Oct 29, 2010 · A 150 gr bullet in a 308 gives you about 2 ft-lbs. less recoil that a 30-06. Trajectory, shot placement... blah blah blah... Both will do what you want. The 30-06 will do more, the .308 has a shorter action... The 30-06 has more kick/boom the .308 has less. I would take the .308 because of personal preference. But like I said.

12 Gauge slug vs. rifle under 100 yards for hunting
Jan 26, 2011 · Ok, maybe I was a bit ignorant in my last post, I hunt, well, lots of wildlife. Turkeys, ducks, deer, quail, pheasant, hogs, yotes, *****, snakes, rabbits, squirrels, crows, and clays have all been at the receiving end of my shotgun(s). Try that with one rifle, but I am getting kind of bitter, as this wasn't supposed to be a shotgun vs rifle ...
Remington 700 - 223 or 308? | Gun and Game Forum
Oct 6, 2010 · Good stuff DF. If you want a paper puncher for maybe up to 500 yards or so,(even out to 1,000) the 223 is a great choice. If you don't reload then 223 has a huge advantage over 308. I myself don't reload either, and my Remington 700 XCR Tactical in 308 rarely comes out, ammo is just too expensive, I just usually grab my AR for punching paper.
Savage vs. Mossberg and .308 vs. 30.06 | Gun and Game Forum
Nov 26, 2011 · well, you don't really need the 30-06, the 308 is only 70 to 80 fps slower firing the same projectile, and if you ever start reloading, the 308 is a little cheaper to load for. but really either one will do just fine. theres really not much difference between the two, it's mostly a personal preference.
