Brewing small batches in larger system? | Community
Aug 22, 2008 · This might sound like a stupid question, but are there any downsides/pitfalls with brewing a small batch in a system designed for larger batches? In order words, if I designed a 5-gallon system, would brewing 1-2.5 gallons for now be just fine? Similarly, does a 10-gallon system work for brewing 5-gallon batches? Thanks in advance!

Mar 25, 2014 · There is a place down the road that could not make enough beer with a 3.5 bbl system. They added more tanks, hired assistants, and still could not keep up. They are expanding in a new location with a much bigger system. The problem many have is that they spend all of their time making beer, and not tending to the other aspects of the business.

Apr 6, 2018 · Most manufacturers under size their systems where either the kettle is designed to boil the batch size or the fermenters are designed to hold the batch size with 25% headspace but in reality, a 15 bbl system should be able to safely boil 18.5 bbl and the fermenter should be able to ferment 15.5-16 bbl so that after losses it will recover 15 bbl.

I read a bunch of stuff stating to leave the beer on the yeast cake for a minimum of 10 days so that the yeast can "Clean up the beer". That just seems a bit too long for a 4-6 ...
