Suppose you get a better dryer, installer goes "oh ok 3-prong cord, jumper ground". You miss it. You sell the house. Etc. 1000 things can happen.

Then you need to change the dryer cord to NEMA 14, following all dryer instructions on how to remove the bootleg neutral-ground bonding on the dryer. At this point the dryer chassis will "float". A neutral failure will not energize the dryer.

The dryer was originally 4-prong, so we bought a 3-prong cord and installed it. It works fine, except I am not entirely sure if I installed the ground wire correctly. Originally, there was a green wire on the cord itself, and that was connected to the screw on the top of the first picture.

May 28, 2020 · I need to change the cord on an electric dryer from 4-prong to 3-prong. My questions concern 1) what to do with the ground when moving to the 3-prong dryer and 2) how to test whether the installation is working as it should using a multi-meter. A 3-wire dryer cord has the neutral bonded to the dryer case internally. The neutral DOES/DID serve both purposes. This exception was removed from the code several cycles ago which is why 4-wire dryer cords, with a dedicated equipment ground, are now required.

A surface-mount electrical box extender, a few feet of conduit, a surface-mount electric box and a few feet of correct-gauge wire & wire nuts should be relatively inexpensive compared to no insurance coverage.
