The tables referenced by the expressions and functions don't use the NOLOCK table hint when accessed. SQL Server doesn't allow for more than one table hint from each of the following groups for each table in the FROM clause: Granularity hints: PAGLOCK, NOLOCK, READCOMMITTEDLOCK, ROWLOCK, TABLOCK, or TABLOCKX.

The effect is that if anything has to be locked (for other reasons unrelated to the presence of the ROWLOCK hint) then these locks will be kept at row level and not escalated to a higher level.
