My present research is on the ‘making of England’ in the tenth century: literature and politics and questions of national and cultural identity, the history of Old English and Anglo-Latin literature.

Sep 3, 2019 · Dr Mark Atherton is a Fellow of Regents Park College Oxford, a tutor of Old and Middle English and of the History of English. He is widely published on the subject of Old English, both from a linguistic and literary perspective; he is the author of numerous academic papers and several textbooks.

More recently, I have become Visiting Professor of Medieval English Literature at the University of Düsseldorf, Germany, dividing my time between Oxford and Düsseldorf during the winter semester 2016-17.

Dr Atherton’s research interests include Old English as a language, including the teaching of Old English, and narrative prose in the late Old English period. He is currently working on a book on the philology of J R R Tolkien and its influence on his fictional writings.
