The London, Midland and Scottish Railway (LMS[a]) was a British railway company. It was formed on 1 January 1923 under the Railways Act 1921, [1] which required the grouping of over 120 separate railways into four.

The London, Midland and Scottish Railway had the largest stock of steam locomotives of any of the 'Big Four' Grouping, i.e. pre-Nationalisation railway companies in the UK.

The London, Midland and Scottish Railway formed with the SR, GWR and LNER to form British Railways in 1948. The LMS are supposed to represent the Z-Stacks from TUGS. However, for the most part, the midis are not as bad as their TUGS counterparts, with a few exceptions.

Expresses on the former Midland lines were often double-headed and the dominance of the MR in the early years, meant that the former London and North Western Railway expresses were forced to be unnecessarily double-headed as well, a demoralising effect on former LNWR railwaymen. No wonder there was internal strife in the early years.

The London Midland and Scottish Railway, (L. M. and S.) or (LMS) was created by the Railways Act 1921 from a number of Constituent Companies and came in to force on the 1st January 1923.
