Saint Matthew Parish was established by Bishop Daniel J. Gercke of Tucson on December 20, 1939. Father Willard David Kinney was appointed the first pastor. The first Mass in the parish was held in the Capitol School auditorium.

At St. Matthew, we are dedicated to providing a Catholic education rooted in academic excellence, spiritual development, and a commitment to forming young leaders with strong values. St. Matthew Catholic School, founded in 1943 by the Sisters of the Blessed Virgin Mary, has been a cornerstone of Catholic education in downtown Phoenix for over 80 years. These dedicated Sisters laid a strong foundation, integrating academic excellence with Catholic values, which continues to guide the school’s mission today.
