    Common Causes

    Red eye is not always related to an underlying condition. It may be caused by:

    • Trauma/injury to the eye
    • Dryness of the eyes
    • Over- wearing your contact lenses or wearing them improperly
    • Staring at a computer screen for too long/straining the eyes
    • Smoking
    • Lack of sleep
    • Swimming

    • Your child comes home from school with red or pink eyes

    • Eyes are red and seeping or covered with yellow, brown or green mucus

    • Vision changes, sensitivity to light and severe headache
    • Trauma, eg: Eye gets pierced
    Self-treatment: Self- care steps that may be helpful in some less- serious cases:
    • Apply cool compression over your eyes
    • Take a break from your computer
    • Avoid irritants such as smoke
    • If it is a result of lack of sleep, take a nap
    • Remove your contact lenses if you experience red- eye while wearing them
    • Wear protective eyewear when in windy places
    • Use swim goggles
