Rescue and remove the person from the water (without putting yourself in danger). Ask someone to call emergency medical services (EMS). If alone, give 2 minutes of care, then call EMS. Begin rescue breathing and CPR.

Chest compressions can also help push some of the water out, but rescue breaths should be the priority. The 911 operator can also give you instructions on what to do if no one knows CPR. Follow all directions and continue giving CPR until your child starts breathing or emergency personnel arrive and take over.

After 30 compressions, you need to give two rescue breaths. Continue to perform CPR, alternating 30 chest compressions with two rescue breaths, (30:2) until: emergency help arrives and takes over. the child starts showing signs of life and starts to breathe normally.
