People have been flipping pancakes while running through the streets to mark Shrove Tuesday across the south of England. Many donned fancy dress outfits to take part in Pancake Day races, watched by hundred of onlookers.

The Olney Pancake Race in Buckinghamshire dates back more than five centuries, but why did it start and who can take part? The run itself dates back to 1445 and while no-one knows how it started, it has taken place every year since it was revived in 1948.
