A team of marine archaeologists has serendipitously found a remarkable object on the Baltic seabed: a 19th-century wreck of a sailing ship that contains over 100 bottles of champagne and mineral water, many of which are still unopened.

Shipwrecks can tell us a lot about the people who were traveling aboard the vessels and the time periods they lived in. The Titanic wreck, for example, contained precious items like cutlery and violins.

Divers recently discovered bottles of champagne and wine that are almost two hundred years old in a shipwreck. The Polish divers explored the shipwreck of a 19th-century sailing ship off the coast of Sweden.

A team of divers dedicated to combing the Baltic Sea for shipwrecks said they finally have reason to celebrate after discovering a 19th-century vessel laden with about 100 sealed bottles of champagne. “I think we have a treasure,” Tomasz Stachura, leader of the Polish diving group Baltictech, posted to Facebook after the team’s July 11 discovery.
