From June through August, high winds pick up dust from the Sahara Desert and can carry it westward more than 5,000 miles to the Texas Gulf Coast.

We generally see this dust make the 5,000-7,000-mile trek across the Atlantic Ocean during the late spring, summer and early autumn. We could see the first plume of the season as early as Monday of next week.
