The predominant classic symptoms are nocturnal pain of the hand, and sensory disturbances within the distribution of the median nerve, both of which are characteristically relieved by hand movements.

The sensory supply of the digits of the hand is from the median and ulnar nerves. Both nerves terminate in the hand in a variable number of straight branches, which are the common digital nerves.
