Indigenous Peoples' Day, also known as Columbus Day, is celebrated on the second Monday in October, with many stores remaining open but with no mail and some banks closed. Here in San Diego, there are several celebrations as San Diego County is home to the most tribal communities of any county in the U.

But coastal areas of the city are in the midst, and mist, of an unusual period of thick, come-and-go fog that’s lasted more than a week and will linger for several more days, the National Weather Service said. The fog was so thick on Saturday it made an 814-foot Japanese aircraft carrier nearly invisible during a port call in San Diego.
