A bar chart is useful when you want to do a quick side-by-side comparison ... Then, you can customize them by changing colors and layout or adding chart elements like axis titles.

Then, scroll through the options to add tabs, groups ... text through the Format tab and the Format Chart Pane, I find the easiest way to do this is through the Home tab on the ribbon.
