Monét’s highly anticipated BET Awards performance comes nearly a year after she was turned down for a slot at the 2023 MTV Video Music Awards. In September, the Jaguar II artist told followers on X, “My team was told it is ‘too early in my story’ for that opportunity,” after fans complained about her absence from the show.

Usher, Victoria Monét and Tyla were just a few of the big winners at the 2024 BET Awards, which took place in Los Angeles tonight at the Peacock Theatre. Taraji P. Henson hosted the four-hour show, which featured a parade of performances from Lauryn Hill, Will Smith, Megan Thee Stallion, Ice Spice, Childish Gambino, GloRilla and many, many more.

The “Yeah!” hitmaker was presented with the award by Babyface and L.A. Reid, who co-founded LaFace Records and signed Usher when he was just a teen. Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis also came to the stage to participate in the presentation.

There’s a reason why we said this year belongs to Victoria Monét. Following an epic snub on MTV’s part, where they said it was “too early” in her career to perform at the VMAs, BET took the opportunity to right that wrong and named the three-time Grammy winner as one of this year’s performers.
