You don't need to book, but if you want to ensure you get a tour of the tunnels and/or you don't want to wait, then booking is advised. It costs £5 per person to book (entry to the pit and the tour itself are free). It's more enjoyable if you allow a couple of hours to arrive and wander round the above ground facilities before doing the tour (the tour makes more sense then). So if you plan to arrive at 11am, then book your tour for 1pm. If you arrive a bit before your tour is due, you may be allowed to join an earlier tour - it depends on the guide. If you haven't booked, then it would be a good idea to arrive as early as possible and go straight to the tour to see how long the queue is.
