It's English Heritage so it is free f you are a member but around £5 if not a member.

Can you enter from the river side from the ferry or must you walk right around to the carpark/landside entrance

The entrance is on the riverside at the Watergate.

Yes takes about 5 mins. There are signs but you can just follow river path alongside seawall.
