Definitely no need to book in advance. Depending on times it may be worth having coffee first as it is big and coffee facilities in the gallery are limited (just a machine on Mondays). They did offer to stamp our hands to go out and have a coffee-but it's a bit of a hassle. The British idea of lots of cafés in galleries hasn't caught on here yet.

Yes, it is possible -and even better- to visit the place without tour guide, may be with the help of a booklet. There are parking places, but outside the walls of the town, 10-15 minutes of walk from Palazzo Ducale. The closest and easiest is "Borgo Mercatale", a square just outside the walls on the west side of the town (you will easily see the signal). Even if you just go around the town you are bound to find it.
