Its highly varied geography encompasses the high, snow-capped peaks of the Rockies, the northeastern portion of the Colorado Plateau, and a portion of the western edge of the Great Plains. Colorado is the eighth-largest U.S. state by area, but with an estimated population of 5,957,493 as of July 1, 2024, is the 21st most populous of the fifty states. Its capital and largest city is Denver.
