Hi - we're visiting Thiepval next month. Do you need to book the tour in advance or do you just turn up? If you need to book it, is there a website? Thank you!

It will be fine to just turn up. There is ample parking and a museum (if you so wish) besides the memorial itself. It is certainly a must if you are touring the battlefields as are the Lochagnor crater (the very start of the Battle of the Somme on 1st July 1916 and the Newfoundland Memorial (both of these I also reviewed recently) and the town of Albert. We visit the Somme quite often so we would be happy to answer other questions you may have. Trip Advisor does not permit the inclusion of any links but try searching on google for visit somme great war memorials for useful information Enjoy your visit.

You don't have to travel by tolls at all and honestly they don't make the journey any faster if you do. If you pay the tolls you're on motorways the whole way yet if you don't pay the tolls you go through all the towns and get to see all the sites where your family would have been fighting and its often the same length of time.
Hello, we are travelling to France at the end of August and would like to have a one day stop-over in Somme to visit the memorial and battlefields. We will be travelling with a small dog though - could you please advise if the dogs are allowed on memorial sites (on a short lead of course). Many thanks.

Just come back from the area. Loads of dogs about.
