Very cool site. The staff and park attempt to regulate traffic control here but it's not managed well enough. We waited about 15 minutes in line to head into the tower. From there, you are simply ush… Full review by lileeewhoo

Fun easy hike. Amazing views. Best to go early to visit Sintra or it gets pretty crowded. Not so bad in mid November, though a bit chilly Full review by j2chan

You do not need to climb back up, you can go through a tunnel to exit. The steps are dark and slightly uneven, so a flashlight helps. Not strenuous but I would not recommend if you have mobility concerns. You can still take photos from the top and if you arrive at opening time, avoid crowds.

From Lisbon take train to Sintra. It would be a long walk from the train station, might be better to take an Uber. You will be bombarded with tour guides who want to drive you around as soon as you get off train. There are two different hop on hop off buses you can take from the train station. One route goes up the mountain to Pena Palace and Moorish Castle. The other bus route takes you to Quinta De Regelaria. We used bus for our trip. To find the busses make an immediate right turn as you leave the train stations (like a u-turn), walk down sidewalk along train station and busses will be about a block down street. Pay cash and bus employees have maps to help you figure out which route you need. Be prepared with good shoes, hills are very steep. Also have water and snack with you. Be sure to see the town of Sintra too. Enjoy your trip. I have detailed reviews of everything in Sintra posted if you find them in my profile.

The summer can be a bit hot, so spring or autumn is best if you are really concerned about the heat. I do remember that there were restrooms in several locations, but not certain of the precise places. They were certainly available near the entrance. And note, this is in Portugal - not Spain - outside of Lisbon.
Q:
Are there less crowds in the morning or evening?
A:
I was there for a visit in late afternoon, less crowded and the sun wasn’t as strong as it is in the morning.
